Detecting nasality in vowels with the help of nasal vibration measurements
نویسنده
چکیده
The spectral patterns in a signal obtained with an accelerometer microphone attached to the nose as an indicator for nasality in normal speech will be described for individual vowels. Simultaneously to that recording a film has been made with a fiberendoscope, showing the opening of the velar port to control for acoustic coupling of the oral and the nasal cavity.

The Effect of Vocal Loudness on Nasalance of Vowels in Persian Adults
Objectives: Nasality is one of the important parameters in pathology of voice resonance. Voice of normal adults has nasality to some extent. It appears that nasality, like other parameters of voice, can be affected by loudness which can be measured in experimental evaluations. This study was conducted to determine the effect of vocal loudness on nasalance of vowels in normal adults and to ident...
متن کاملPerception and Acoustics of Vowel Nasality in Brazilian Portuguese
This study explores the relationship between identification, degree of nasality and vowel quality in oral, nasal and nasalized vowels in Brazilian Portuguese. Despite common belief that the language possesses contrastive nasal vowels, literature examination shows that nasal vowels may be followed by a nasal resonance, while nasalized vowels must be followed by a nasal consonant. It is argued th...
متن کاملMeasurement of vowel nasalization by multi - dimensional acoustic analysis
When the velum lowers during vowels, the velopharyngeal port is opened, and there is acoustic coupling between the nasal cavity and the main vocal tract, giving rise to a distinct acoustic quality which we call nasality. Nasal coupling results in energy losses at low frequencies, damping of oral formants (especially F1), and introduction of nasal formants corresponding to the resonances of the ...
متن کاملNasality from Moroccan Arabic Nasal and Pharyngeal Consonants: Patterns of Airflow and Nasalance
This aerodynamic study investigates velum activity during the production of nasal and pharyngeal consonants, using airflow, and during the production of vowels adjacent to nasal and pharyngeal consonants, using airflow and nasalance, in Moroccan Arabic (MA). The results indicate that the velum is lowered during the production of pharyngeals and that this overlaps on adjacent vowels. However, na...
متن کاملPhonetic Sources of Sound Change: the Influence of Thai on Nasality
The phonetic realization of nasal vowels produced by Pwo speakers of different ages can vary. The present study investigated mid and low nasal vowels of Pwo speakers from Mae Hong Son province, Thailand. Due to the higher tendency of language contact with Thai, the younger group’s nasal vowels were expected to lose more nasality than the older group. The emergence of final nasal consonants was ...
